“Panopticum”
“Panopticum” is a visual exploration of surveillance, paranoia, and the illusion of comfort. Borrowing its name and essence from the Panopticon—a prison model designed for constant observation from a single, invisible vantage point—the series unpacks how the uncertainty of being watched conditions behavior, even in the absence of an observer.
In nature and society alike, awareness of being seen alters presence. The series reflects this psychological tension through bright, nostalgic, 1980s-inspired homes—spaces that feel familiar, safe, even cheerful. Yet, beneath their colorful surfaces lies a quiet unease, a subtle disruption. The comforting aesthetic becomes a camouflage for discomfort, much like the way modern life veils deep vulnerabilities under the guise of convenience.
Technology’s silent gaze is at the core of the series. Our homes—once sanctuaries—are now permeated by devices that observe, record, and learn from us. We consent to this silently, distracted by comfort. The paintings reveal how digital surveillance blends into the fabric of everyday life, creating a world where being watched becomes routine, and self-censorship, second nature.
At the same time, Panopticum touches on the theme of paranoia—a primal fear that someone is watching, lurking, and threatening. Whether real or imagined, this sensation evokes ancient survival instincts.
But surveillance today isn't one-sided. We expose our lives on social media, share our moments and spaces voluntarily. And just as we perform for the gaze of others, we also observe, scroll, judge, compare.
So where is the line? Who is watching, and who is being watched?
